Middlesbrough libraries and community centres face demolition
by Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette
Feb 18 2012
THE fate of buildings affected by Middlesbrough Council cuts has been revealed.
The authority is having to meet spending cuts of about £50m over four years.
Mayor Ray Mallon recently announced the final list of more than 90 cuts for the coming year.
A number of community facilities were included and their fates have now been revealed, with demolition of several library and community buildings among the chosen options.
Mr Mallon has said the council can simply no longer provide many of the services which people have come to take for granted.
However, the council is offering some buildings to be taken over by local community groups. Mr Mallon said that, with such a move, he expected to see the creation of new community facilities run by local people for local people.
Other buildings will be demolished with the sites being brought forward for development. Premises used by children’s centres are becoming part of the primary schools they are attached to.
Buildings available for transfer to community groups:
Beechwood Youth and Community Centre, Brambles Farm Community Centre, Mill Hill Recreation Pavilion, North Ormesby Pavilion Children’s Centre, Pallister Park Centre (to become a martial arts academy), Park End Community Centre and Thorntree Park Pavilion.
Buildings surplus to requirements:
Children’s centres being closed are being transferred to the primary schools they are attached to. They include the centres at: Green Lane Primary School, Newham Bridge Priimary School, Breckon Hill School, Kader Primary School, Rose Wood Primary School, St Augustine’s School, The Avenue Primary School, Brambles Farm Primary School, Archibald Primary School, Newport Primary School and Thorntree Primary School.
Breckon Hill Community Centre will have its council subsidy withdrawn but it will remain open and be run by a management committee.
Clairville Stadium is to be closed in future years at a time linked to the development of a new sports village at Prissick.
The Deaf Centre will be relocated and the existing building sold off.
Grove Hill Library and the Grove Hill Youth and Community Centre will be demolished and the sites linked into the Grove Hill regeneration project.
Hemlinton Initiative Centre will see its council subsidy withdrawn but it will remain open and be run by a management committee.
Kader Youth and Community Centre will be demolished and the site will be offered for development.
Langdon Square Community Centre and the Langridge Initiative Centre will have their council subsidy phased out but the centres will remain open and be run by management committees.
Lingfield Farm is being considered for development.
Newport Neighbourhood Centre will be demolished with the site being brought forward for development.
Thorntree Library and Thorntree Youth Centre will be demolished with the sites being brought forward for development

i see that you have listed 7 buildings up for tranfer to the community yet the council press release also available on the council website only lists six it seems that pallister park centre has been omited from both yet surely if this building is up for transfer then that also should be listed to allow any other interested parties to apply yet you have stated it is turning into a martial arts accademy,my understanding is that the football teams currently using the site are interested in still using the centre the council have said any interested parties should fill in notice of interest forms and have untill 29th of this month so how is it that even this paper is stating it has a use already decided ???? would be interested to hear from the council regarding this omission from the list which i understand is a legal requirement

Absolutely outrageous. Why cant they be mothballed so that when we get a decent Mayor/Council combination we might get them reopened (possibly at the expense of Mima). The man's obssessed with demolition.

All these closures , demolitions destroying our town yet Mbro council spends millions on MIMA because that's what Mallon wants and budgets to spend millions decorating the town hall . If the people of Mbro wanted MIMA the visitor numbers would not be dire. If was a football manager he would have been kicked into touch a long time agohe has done sweet ...for this town other than destroy communities and promote his own ego

having worked for middlesbrough council for a number of years with the community it makes me feel sick at the thought of demolition of certain buildings, the thought of all of this being caused by greedy narrow minded people with jobs that are un aware of decent people
