Think outside the box to coin a now known Mallon expression. .....It was the disgusting tactics of Mallon that did work.
Neverthess approx 18% of the people of Middlesbrough voted for him and that means the other 82% have to live with it.

Hi Borobot,
Middlesbrough folk getting what they deserve, only themselves to blame, and I'll bet the government have taken cogniscance of the fact.

Re: The Yellow Brick Road
Ray Mallon pledging renewed vigour after election success
by Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette
May 7 2011
2Share RAY Mallon has scored a hat-trick of Mayoral election victories.
By the narrowest of margins he was elected on the first count. He polled 50.4% of the vote - just 0.4% more than he needed to win on the first round.
His 17,917 votes took him to his third successive election victory to the top political job in the Town Hall.
Mr Mallon told the Gazette in the next four years his administration would continue in the same vein as in the past, but with renewed vigour on certain issues.
His election victory comes after a controverisal campaign in which he was put under the spotlight with the release of secret taped conversations with Boro Cars boss Mohammed Bashir.
Mr Mallon apologised for foul-mouthed comments made in the private discussions, which included a sex slur against a Middlesbrough Council officer.
Despite the revelations, he was returned as mayor, but with his share of the vote down from 58.6% in 2007.
Michael J. Carr the Labour candidate came second with 11,405 votes compared to 3,529 that Labour polled four years ago.
But Liberal Democrat Chris Foote-Wood, saw his party’s share of the vote plunge from four years ago. He had 3,256 votes.
Lloyd Cole-Nolan came just behind in fourth place and doubled the Conservative tally from four years ago.
Mr Mallon arrived at the count accompanied by his campaign manager Nasser Din.
Richard Long, the returning officer, declared the Mayoral election result in the early afternoon in the Rainbow Leisure centre in Coulby Newham.
After the declaration of the result Mr Mallon told the Gazette: "I am really pleased with the result. When you stand for a third term it will always be difficult politically when you have to get more than 50% of the vote.
"We managed that and I am really grateful to the public of Middlesbrough.
"Over the next four years I will continue in the same vein but we have to have a renewed vigour towards issues such as Gresham, Grove Hill, as well as the social deprivation agenda which is a prerequisite to the long-term sustainability of the town as a whole.
"I am particularly interested in the family - we need to intervene with certain families because social deprivation concerns the children of today and previously their parents and grandparents and great grandparents.
Mr Mallon said jobs were being provided in Middlesbrough but out of a working age population 18,000 were in receipt of some sort of benefit. "We have to deal with that benefit culture," he said.
Mr Mallon added that 33,000 people travelled into work in Middlesbrough each day because many of the town’s own people were not equipped for the workplace.
"The only guarantee for the future is the young people and the local authority and, I as the Mayor, have to come up with creative ideas to deal with social deprivation issues."
Michael J Carr thanked his family for their support and Labour Party members who voted for him.
He said the 11,405 votes for him trebled the Labour vote in the 2007 Mayoral election.
"I had strong and determined opposition.
"It is now for Mr Mallon to deal with issues of making this town as the destination for people with investment to make," he said.
Chris Foote-Wood said the day’s results were disappointing for him and for other Liberal Democrat candidates in Middlesbrough. It was due to two factors - Ray Mallon continued to have the support of at least half the voters in the town and Liberal Democrats in the elections across the country had been voted down for reasons other than local ones.
Lloyd Cole-Nolan said he had enjoyed the campaign.
"We have doubled our Conservative vote in this town," he said.
The turnout in the Mayoral election was 36.5%.

Local Elections 2011: Middlesbrough results
by George Oliver, Evening Gazette
May 7 2011
LABOUR were the big winners in the Middlesbrough Council elections.
They increased their seats in the council chamber from 26 to 30.
Among the other big winners of the night were former Deputy Mayor Bob Brady who won in Gresham after losing his seat four years ago.
And Joe Michna retained his seat in Park Ward and became the first Green Party councillor to be elected in Middlesbrough. He was previously elected as a Liberal Democrat.
Independents successful at the first attempt included Mick Saunders in Park End and Michael Hudson who by six votes took a seat from Labour in Coulby Newham.
Among the casualties of the night were Ken Walker, who lost his seat in Gresham and long-serving Independent councillor Jackie Elder lost her seat in Linthorpe. George and Pat Rogers, who recently left the Conservatives and stood as independents in Brookfield, also lost out to Labour.
There was also disappointment for Peter Porley, who recently became an independent and who lost his Park End seat.
The make-up of the council is now Labour 30, Independents 12 (including two Marton Independents), Conservative four, Green Party one, and Liberal Democrats one.
Charlie Rooney, leader of the Labour Group, said Labour had run a decent, honest and professional campaign across the borough. He was pleased with the performance of all Labour candidates.
"I am disappointed Labour did not win the Mayoral election but the Labour Group will continue to work with the elected Mayor for the benefit of Middlesbrough," he said.
Chris Hobson, Conservative Group leader, said: "We would have liked a better result and we have worked hard but it was not our time. The four Conservative councillors will, however, make an impact in the authority."
Maelor Williams, who retained the Stainton and Thornton seat, was the only Liberal Democrat success of the night.
Ron Lowes, an Independent councillor in Middlesbrough for 35 years, again topped the poll in Acklam.
He told the Gazette it was his 10th election and the next four years would be the his last as a councillor.
Joe Michna said: "It is great for the Green Party and my major issue is to put environmental sustainability and improvement firmly on the Middlesbrough agenda."
Bob Brady said: "It is good to be back."
Jackie Elder said: "Many voters did support me and I am very appreciative of that. I do wish everyone well."
Ken Walker, who was a Middlesbrough councillor for 16 years, including seven as council leader, was deposed from his seat in Gresham.
He said: "I am disappointed but you come into politics knowing it is down to the people and they make the choice."
