£650k investment to revamp Tees Valley Metro stations
by Dave Robson, Evening Gazette Mar 10 2012
IMPROVEMENTS to two railway stations are back on the timetable - but the revamps are set to be less extensive than once proposed.
Redcar Central and Saltburn stations are in line for the upgrades in a £650,000 investment as part of the Tees Valley Metro - a light railway linking Teesside to Darlington.
The Metro project is viewed as being a key driving force in boosting the economy. But the investment in Redcar and Saltburn stations will be much less than once envisaged.
Previously, £5m was set aside for the work, only for a cash allocation to be scrapped by the Government.
Redcar and Cleveland Council’s Cabinet will be told next week that the authority has now been allocated £650,000 by the Tees Valley Metro Board to allow work to be done.
Under the proposals, Redcar Station would receive £500,000.
Work would include:
New pedestrian access to the westbound platform and ticket office from West Dyke Road, with lighting, CCTV and cycle parking facilities;
Lighting, CCTV, help points, shelters and signage to improve the eastbound station facilities;
A new link from West Dyke Road to the station building on the north;
A distinctive art feature.
A £150,000 scheme would also see Saltburn Station’s waiting rooms upgraded, with improved facilities detailing rail arrivals and departures.
Progress on the Tees Valley Metro project, which could cost £220m, was hit by the Government’s cuts in 2010 and its future remains uncertain.

Excuse me, but this is the first time that I ever heard that a place called Tees Valley had a Metro.
The people of this region have already informed, through the Evening Gazette, that it does not want this bunch of NGOs, which continue to use our taxes, to call itself Tees Valley anything.
Please sack yourselves as our elected representaives have not followed our wishes.

When will these clowns realise that we don't have a Tees Valley and we don't have a Metro?
They obviously don't live in this area.
