Public no show at Middlesbrough council spending plans meeting
by Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette
Jan 24 2012
A PUBLIC meeting organised for residents to discuss council spending plans was cancelled after missing one key ingredient - the public.
Not a single resident turned up for yesterday’s budget consultation meeting in Middlesbrough Town Hall.
That is despite it being the first of four chances this week for people living in the borough to discuss the authority’s finances, its budget, and council tax levels for the coming financial year.
Two members of the media turned up - but the event was halted as councillors had no-one to explain their plans to.
On the agenda was the setting of the council’s budget of around £230m - due to be finalised in early March - and a proposed 3.5% in council tax.
But this week’s presentations will not include the planned budget cuts announced recently by the Mayor.
Deputy Mayor, and executive member for resources Councillor Dave Budd, said many people had already had their say in the budget cuts consultations.
“We have had more consultation than ever before,” he added.
“I do hope, however, that anyone who has not had the opportunity to look at the overall budget will come along to another of these meetings.”
Mayor Ray Mallon added: “Over the last three or four months there has been a significant amount of consultation with the public with regard to the budget for the coming year. This has been a vital exercise in moulding my thinking on the finances of the town.”
Mr Mallon said his budgetary statement next month had seen some changes from the original proposals after responses from the public.
“I am really grateful to the public as a whole for being so involved in the process and I have said on a number of occasions this has been a genuine consultation process,” he added.

No doubt it will all be the Council's fault for arranging it when there was a double bill of Coronation Street on, and with Becky's much anticipated departure too. I mean, just what do the Council expect? ;-)

My 'invitation' arrived by email after 5p.m. yesterday which informed me that tonight's meeting is for 'Young People under 25' Not fitting into that category I will stay at home. No mention of a Monday meeting.
However having already attended several meetings and listened to Mr Mallon at length - and had my say, I don't think I missed anything

I would like to think that it was because the people of our town hold the councillors and the mayor in contempt. Not only do the make a mess of the budgets which leads to services being reduced or scrapped they have the audacity to put up council tax ( against government advice and with the promise of financial help) so we have to pay for the blunders twice. To all the members who voted for a council tax rise. Don't bother knocking on my door come the next election.

Who on earth is going to take these Councillors seriously, when they vote for a Council tax rise , in one of the most deprived areas in the Country. They are not interested in what you or i say,as they seem to do what they are going to do anyway.
Both news channel's mentioned yesterday, that only a small minority have not accepted the offer from the Government. Some are even cutting their next Council tax bill's. All this Council does,is sit there and blame the Government for their own ill spending over the years.
As someone has already mentioned, the public need to know the names of the Councillors who voted for this unnecessary rise in Council tax,and publish their names just before the next locals.
