Public no show at Middlesbrough council spending plans meeting
by Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette
Jan 24 2012
A PUBLIC meeting organised for residents to discuss council spending plans was cancelled after missing one key ingredient - the public.
Not a single resident turned up for yesterday’s budget consultation meeting in Middlesbrough Town Hall.
That is despite it being the first of four chances this week for people living in the borough to discuss the authority’s finances, its budget, and council tax levels for the coming financial year.
Two members of the media turned up - but the event was halted as councillors had no-one to explain their plans to.
On the agenda was the setting of the council’s budget of around £230m - due to be finalised in early March - and a proposed 3.5% in council tax.
But this week’s presentations will not include the planned budget cuts announced recently by the Mayor.
Deputy Mayor, and executive member for resources Councillor Dave Budd, said many people had already had their say in the budget cuts consultations.
“We have had more consultation than ever before,” he added.
“I do hope, however, that anyone who has not had the opportunity to look at the overall budget will come along to another of these meetings.”
Mayor Ray Mallon added: “Over the last three or four months there has been a significant amount of consultation with the public with regard to the budget for the coming year. This has been a vital exercise in moulding my thinking on the finances of the town.”
Mr Mallon said his budgetary statement next month had seen some changes from the original proposals after responses from the public.
“I am really grateful to the public as a whole for being so involved in the process and I have said on a number of occasions this has been a genuine consultation process,” he added.
