Tennis World, on the Prissick Base, Marton Road, raised the profile of tennis in Middlesbrough considerably when it was officially opened on Saturday; 13th December, 1986, by Rodger Taylor M.B.E., former British no.1. He commented, “I’m very impressed . . . . the indoor section may not be as big as some of the London clubs, but when you take in the outside courts, I think the complex amounts to 22 courts now, and there aren’t many larger ones in Britain, including Wimbledon”. The first Chairman of Tennis World Ltd., was a retired businessman, Foster Garton, with Nigel Garton as Managing Director. Opened in conjunction with Tennis World Ltd., and Linthorpe Tennis Club, it offers four indoor courts, nine all-weather courts belonging to Linthorpe Tennis Club and ten hard courts belonging to Middlesbrough Council. The artificial grass carpet was supplied by Tennis Weave, of Leicester. Designed by the Swainston Partnership, of Middlesbrough, the main contractors were Whelan Ltd., of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
