Well, been and seen.
And, as much as it was funny in places, with a lot of familiar faces and places, it really didn't tell us anything we didn't already know.
While we are all aware of John Waite and the story of how he came to be Middlesbroughs Conservative Candidate, what we all wanted to see was what so damning that it could cause a by-election. And what we got was a rerun of Postergate, Stuart Bells absenteeism, his sons criminal record and the people of Middlesbrough all hate Bell but still vote him in.
I left with a feeling of 'tell me something I dont know'.
Maybe my time on this forum has afforded me access to such things that the politically disinterested dont go looking for.
In the Q&A afterwards, there were calls and encouragement for the film to be televised, in order to expose those that blindly vote Labour to the truth about our MP. I really dont see how this will change anything. Even if a by-election was to be invoked, Middlesbrough Labour Party have a stark choice: Show their disregard for the people of Middlesbrough and put Bell up as candidate again, or deselect Bell, bring in someone else and watch as the sheeple vote Labour yet again. And Middlesbrough Labour Party reap the accolades for giving the people of the town an MP they can rely on.
If there's no by-election, then we are stuck with him for another four years, he retires and we get another MP anyway. So what's the difference?
Same old same old. If I learned one thing tonight it's dont sit behind cllr McTigue in the cinema, 'cos she never shuts up!

Actually, there was one moment that truly shocked me.
During the part filmed outside Sunnyfield House in Guisborough, where they were supporting Paul Bristow, I saw my nan and an aunty!
Imagine, my nanna in a movie that includes a recital of porn, sorry adult erotica, written by Sir Stuart Bell.

Some interesting questions/points made at the end including
Why did the Middlesbrough Labour party re select him as the Labour candidate?
Comment made about how come Mallon hasn't come out criticising Bell ? What relationship do those two now have. I have been informed they have an agreement to leave one another alone.
Tory boy stated he had made hundreds of documentaries. Now one that would be very interesting would be about Mallon.
The truth not the spin !
O btw Ive heard Bells wife has resigned from being his secertary...can BWM or GR confirm ?
Bells son not a nice chappy with his foul mouth tirade directly to the camera.

Middlesbrougbh :Labour Party - always been the same.
Like the tale of the councillor who's husband and son died, and labour councillors burned coffins with their name on it in effigy.
What stand up noble chaps they are in the local Labour group - that person was of course female - it does seem to be only women that Labour harrass and intimidate
No wonder Barbara Dunne joined Labour.....when thats how they treat the "enemy"

and that thug at the end - threatening and attempting to intimidate the tory candidate...
he looked just like any of the druggie scum that populate the ghettos the council created in town - squaring up to a bloke much smaller than himself - what a scumbag. Entitled son of a rich man...if it was the offspring of a tory the labourites would be outraged

Sad sad and desperate man - Your pitiful movie that you and your cabal have bleated on about from a self publicising loser was a damp squib as some of us tried to tell you and so you dredge more trash up,
You poor pathetic creature
Walsh is very much like you more of a never was rather than a has been !!

The rapturous applause bell got when declared winner, looking at the local in pocket media at the time the ticker tape was out celebrating the great victory
The reality was practically surreal, with a touch of thuggish threats and violence thrown in from the left

You may need to embolden your denial of the burning of the effigy of the coffin of a dead womans husband and son - you seem to have made the font invisibly small.
Pssst - it was in the movie...

What a disgrace that Labour brought a coffin into the Town Hall with 'Pearson' written on the top and then burn an effigy.
I do not know how long ago that was but you could hear in her voice how much this still upsets Hazel Pearson.
To carry out such an act was pure 'poison'. Does GR know who this was?

You mean in a documentart movie about what it is like to run for office in a rotten borough that council have turned into the worst place to live in the UK and an absentee MP his record speaks for himself
WOW
You comment on something you have not even seen, or else you would know about the coffin burning - the thug at the count and the spectacular reception Bell received from labour supporters after his victory.....among other things but thats outside the comfort zone for a Labourite in Middlesbrough
So you spout on and on in utter ignorance - Labour through and through
Carry on FARMing
How very Whitehouse of you

Beyond disgraceful, and as pointed out you will noticve she's a woman - Labour really are big, brave and bad when it comes of opposition councillors that are female. Nothings changed in 30 years
Like that thuggish creature featured near the end of the movie who had to be pried away from the filmaker, intimidation and telling him to f*** off
Was the also the convicted thief mentioned in the movie ? or does Bell have two of them ?
Intimidating a tory candidate at a general election count - what kind of person does that......well now we know

And on and on and on goes the bleating. Tonight`s nonsense will be soon forgotten. Do you idiots really think that anything will come of this? It was a bit of light entertainment for the gullible. Why was Chris Foote-Wood shouted down? You obviously do not believe in freedom of speech. I have no doubt where some of your sympathies will lie on Saturday 9 July when the Fascists come to town. Shout the opposition down if you have the numbers.
You have all been led down the proverbial garden path. There wont be a bye-election. Walsh will never be the MP for Middlesbrough, Much in the film was questionable and if libellous or defamatory, an intersting scenario could follow. The use of bad language in the film was typically that of a beaten candidate suffering from the after effects of a bunch of sour grapes.....acid in the stomach and bile in the troubled mind.

The bad language at the count was not spoken by Walsh but by Bells son whilst attempting to intimidate Walsh.
Intimidating an opposition partyy candidate and telling him to f*** off - apparently thats the Labour you seek to apologise for, the Labour you appprove of.
Clear as a Bell what kind of thing you approve of under the guise of Labour support - no doubt you also approve of burning effigies of coffins bearing the names a a womans dead husband and son as well - thats Local Labour for you.
As told in the movie, the one you didn;t see but apparently lurked around outside
You attempt to slate Walsh for using bad language yet not a word about Bells son intimidating a candidate and using foul language.
You would have known that if you had seen the movie, and not just shouted some pro-labour guff through the door and then running away,
did you manage to get your camera/phone back ??

Talking about Mallon?
GR who carried out those despicable acts against Hazel Pearson? Do you condone such activity? Your silence on this speaks volumes

'Middlesbrough - Ground Zero for Government Cuts'
Not a quote from the film. A quote from the muppet who ran out half way through the Q&A. Likening our town to the site of the Twin Towers terrorist atrocity. Disgraceful and offensive on so many levels.
But if the inference was that the town looks like a bombsite, that's 30 years of a Labour council backed up by 13 years of Labour government, not a year of coalition cuts.
After all, the cuts are happening everywhere, not just Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough suffers more (allegedly) than everywhere else, because Middlesbrough is more reliant on benefit and handouts than anywhere else in the country. Why, after 13 years of Labour government, is a Labour 'heartland' in this situation?

On balance, I was disappointed with the film. Not once did it take the time to show anything good about the town. All the shots were of empty, boarded up houses in Gresham. Even Waites' mother, out in the campaign 'battlewagon', was doing the old megaphone bit as they drove around the largely empty, abandoned streets of the town centre. The only time you saw some of the nicer bits of the town were when he was filming outside Tory HQ on Orchard Road or inside the Hospitality Inn (old Dragonara for the purists!) Between this film and the more recent of the TWO Secret Millionaire episodes filmed here (a record for any town?) Middlesbrough is made to look like some post-apocalyptic nightmare.
Ben Glass, John Waites' 'man in Middlesbrough' and campaign manager (?) was a bit of an eye opener. I knew Ben many moons ago when we worked together. Never thought he would be the sort to get into politics, still we were both young and daft back then.
I'm not so sure that this will all blow over, though. Gerry Foley, the Tyne Tees political correspondent was there to film proceedings and I'm guessing we'll be seeing a piece about it on the news tonight. Those concerned really need to make the most of this opportunity and push for Bells removal. Even if he is replaced by another Labour MP, a least he (or she!) wont be invisible and ineffective.{/quote]
