Too many people are judging the role of elected mayor based on the performance of Ray Mallon in that role.
He's been terrible. He's done nothing to hold Labour to account and decimated areas of the town with his 'visions'.
Now he wants there to be no successor to his reign once he's gone.
Bert Ward and others supporting the removal of the role of elected mayor should consider this question:
Why does Ray Mallon want to ensure that no-one else can become mayor once he's gone?
If we revert back to the committee-based system, Labour will close ranks and their misdeeds won't just go unearthed,
they will be buried very deep and they will continue.
Only by keeping a directly elected mayor can we ever hope to expose the current incumbents for what they are.

Regardless of vote on whether to have a mayor I would like to first see an audit of Mallon's tenure to understand what was behind some of the decisions he has made, the relationships formed & why so much money appears to have been spent on demolition projects.
Perhaps this would also throw some light on whether there is too much power in this role.
Bottom line is the chances are we will end up with more inexperienced, unqualified people in charge of massive budgets.
Look what happened with our police force, that was run by a so called elected Police Authority!

Local Labour got Mallon elected and supported him since (in one instance against that of their official candidtate) ... ask yourself why?
Ask too, what will happen the next time?
Ask too how Coppinger got the PC position, all supported by the Labour Political machine!
Then ask finally.... what is democracy, especially around these parts!
