Labour leader Ed Miliband leads tributes to Middlesbrough MP Sir Stuart Bell
The perfect Storm?
Middlesbrough mayor, Ray Mallon, also paid tribute to Sir Stuart, saying he had done a great deal for the town over three decades.
“Professionally, I had what I would describe as a perfect relationship with him," he said. "From the day I became elected mayor until the day of his death, he supported me through thick and thin, as I did him.
"I do believe the best of Stuart Bell will be shared with the public over the coming months as he did many things under the radar that will soon become apparent.”

Dierdre says...
I am sure his family will miss him greatly. I am just as sure that the hyocrites will come out in full force with their comments too.

Dierdre says...
He was also on record as NOT wanting the expense claims of MPs to be made public.

AZZIZZ says...
He is also on record as DEFENDING the claims made by MPs, referring to the problem as a very small minority, this on the politics show, then shifted his stance later as public opinion grew, and the lid was blown off by the Telegraph revelations.
As to the hypocrite comment, I also recall Stuart Bell's stance with regards to Mallon standing for Mayor along with the full page adverts against Mallon.
How does one measure hypocrites?

Handfull says...
Mr Mallon have you wiped from history that Sir Stuart took out a full page article condemning you when you running to be the mayor. Never a truer word was said.

Dierdre says...
These people are politicians - what more would you expect?

Elliottsmithgirl says...
Can we please remember that this man has died today , if you dont wish to show Stuart respect please respect his family. My Mother "God rest her soul " told me we should never speak ill of the dead ! . I had my own issues with Mr bell as a politician but today is not the day to vent anger . thoughts and prayers with his family . RIP

AZZIZZ says...

Want a definition of hypocrites, you just made one

elliotsmithgirl SAYS...
Dying does not change anything, no one is speaking ill of the dead, people are speaking of what was the living, what would you say as to Jimmy Saville then

Dierdre says...
Nobody is angry and nobody is speaking ill of this man, we are only stating facts and/or opinions. Perhaps Elliot has rules for one and rules for another. Look at all the many famous people who have died - much is said about them afterwards, be it good, bad or both. Why should Mr Bell be an exception? Why does the article not mention his first wife and did he not have 2 children, a boy and a girl?

frankyboy says...
I agree with Elliottsmithgirl. He died today, for heavens sake. If you didn't like him, had issues with him, etc, etc, then fair enough, but can you not just can it for a short while and show a little respect, even if just for today?

AZZIZZ says...
The present cannot change the past.
Two important dates in your life
The arrival date of birth and the departure date of death.
Between those two dates is a dash 1/1/1 - 2/2/2 the most important bit is that between the two dates the dash. . . .^ . . That is what is the measure of how you have conducted yourself in life and how you will be ultimately judged.
it is only a little mark the dash but with a massive impact on everyone you come into contact with, think about it.

AZZIZZ says...
I hate sanctimony

borocoffindodger says...
RIP and I do hope that the Boro will get an MP who will look after us. I do not however think that this will happen.

bedan42 says...
I never respected or liked the man....that was so with most local politicians....we will get what we deserve as a replacement...voted in by the Labour mafia sheep.

Dierdre says...
Myra Hindley was as evil as they come - is someone saying we should not speak ill of her?

Claude Ted says...
Sad that he died but I'm afraid the hypocrites are the ones that do not speak the truth. Bell wanted to sweep the expenses issue under the carpet, they pretty much did that anyway. Too few were prosecuted, amazing how many simply made 'errors' & Mr Bell wasnt shy about claiming expenses though not illegally. He also failed to hold a surgery in his constituency for 17 years claiming he was threatened with assault. I never saw any publicity at the time & anyway many people doing jobs get threatened, police, firemen, nurses, doctors etc they don't simply pack in! I shudder to think what candidate this Labour Party will choose for Middlesbrough.

Dierdre says...
It will be a local solicitor I am told by the name of Andy McDonald. The same local solicitor who helped put Ray bMllon where he is and the same local solicitor who held a party at his home to celebrate Mr Mallon's victory over their own Labour candidate -in 2002 - Mr Mallon attended the party as did many of the current labour cllrs. I am also told that this FACT was reported to Labour head office who simply turned a blind eye to it.

'Robocop' required to resign from police force
The detective dubbed Robocop for his no-nonsense approach to policing has been asked to quit his force, the Police Complaints Authority said today.
Detective Superintendent Ray Mallon has admitted that before he was suspended from Cleveland police he received reports alleging officers under his command were guilty of "serious misconduct" but that he failed to act on them, the Complaints Authority deputy chairman, Ian Bynoe, said.
Mr Mallon surprised his supporters when he last week admitted 14 disciplinary charges the force had brought against him.

The 47-year-old detective was suspended more than four years ago as part of the huge Operation Lancet inquiry into alleged wrong-doing within the force and had always protested his innocence.
It is understood he admitted the charges against him so he would be free to stand as a candidate in the upcoming mayoral election in Middlesbrough.
Mr Mallon received his wish today - the third day of the disciplinary hearings which were being held at the force's headquarters in Ladgate Lane, Middlesbrough.
But the PCA deputy chairman's statement was damning of Mr Mallon's conduct, saying it could not be passed off as "the odd error of judgment" that he did not immediately investigating claims officers gave drugs to suspects for confessions.
Mr Bynoe's said today: "The Cleveland Police superintendent who has been required to resign today has admitted that during 1997 he received information and reports alleging the most serious misconduct by officers under his command and that he failed to act on these in the way he should have done.
"The public are entitled to expect that when allegations are made that a police officer is taking drugs and supplying them to prisoners in their custody, or has warned a suspect about planned police action this will result in prompt, searching and effective inquiry.
"The superintendent failed to deal properly and professionally with these reports. Had these matters been dealt with promptly by him Operation Lancet would not have necessitated such a large-scale inquiry."
The PCA said it planned to publish the findings of Operation Lancet but not before disciplinary hearings against some of Mr Mallon's fellow officers were completed.
Stuart Bell, MP for Middlesbrough, outlined Mr Mallon's position saying: "Ray Mallon has been asked to resign from the force on 11 charges which he had pleaded guilty to including falsehood and prevarication, on two further charges he was reprimanded, they also covered falsehood and prevarication and on a final charge he was cautioned.
"It has brought four years of very severe difficulty on Teesside to an end. It is a great relief to everyone concerned, even the local community and I would imagine a great relief to Ray Mallon and what I would hope now is that the community gets itself together and the police force gets itself together and we start confronting the serious problems of crime that we have on Teesside.
"It has been a great sadness that this has gone on for four years when in fact at the end of the day he pleaded guilty to all 14 charges. If he had pleaded guilty four years ago, his legacy would have been of a cop who tried to get to terms with our crime.
"Now it is a reputation that is sullied, a sad day for him and it is a sad day for the police force, leaving the police force when he had so much to offer must be a great sadness for him as it is to the community."

Mr Bell went on to add
that he thought Ray Mallon's decision to stand as mayor of Middlesborough was absurd.

The perfect Storm: friends mates pals - bollocks
Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon said: “I was proud to call him my friend.
“He was personable, articulate, polite and had social grace.
“He didn’t shout above the roof tops how good he was. He got the job done under the radar very well.
“The bigger picture of Stuart Bell is exceptional.”
