Sign of the times: The 100-year-old map adverts that show how our high streets have lost their charm

It was a time before Tesco and Next. A bygone era of boot-makers, tailors and ironmongers. Like other towns 100 years ago, Altrincham, in Cheshire, once thrived with a host of independent traders - rather than the generic chain stores we now see. Sadly, today, it has become a 'ghost town' - littered with empty shops as the recession takes hold. And now, an amazing Edwardian map has been found which reveals just how much its high street has changed. Dated 1910, the map of the historic market town is surrounded by adverts for clock-makers, horse and carriage hire, tobacconists, butchers and a theatre among others.
