Sir Hugh Gilzean Reid:- rolling in his grave seeing what the Evening Gazette turned into
A WREATH-LAYING ceremony is to be held on Tuesday at the grave of the founder of the Evening Gazette - Sir Hugh Gilzean Reid.
The ceremony is being held on the 100th anniversary of his burial at Middlesbrough’s Linthorpe Road Old Cemetery, now Ayresome Gardens park where historian Steve Waller found his lost grave.
Sir Hugh, a campaigning journalist, founded the country's first ha’penny newspaper, the North-Eastern Daily Gazette, which is now the Evening Gazette. He established the 1870 Education Act which made education available to everyone under 13 and championed universal penny postage.
