A man was arrested by police yesterday after a clash with a senior Labour MP in Westminster.
Sir Stuart Bell, the MP for Middlesbrough, was allegedly punched during the disturbance in Portcullis House, the MPs' office block next to the Commons.
Police officers detained the man, who is understood to be a member of Sir Stuart's staff, and took him for questioning in Charing Cross police station.
He was later released on bail.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A man aged 33 was arrested in the Palace of Westminster following an altercation with an MP.
"He was taken into custody in connection with an allegation of assault causing actual bodily harm.
He was subsequently bailed to return later this month pending further inquiries."
Sir Stuart, a barrister, has been in the Commons for 21 years.
A miner's son, he served as a Labour frontbencher under Neil Kinnock
and has for the last seven years represented the Church of England Commissioners in the Commons.
He has also built a reputation as a novelist.
Sir Stuart, 66, would only say yesterday: "I have nothing to say on the matter."
meanwhile the SPENVIEW PUPLICATIONS saga rumbles onLABOUR MP Stuart Bell has been quizzed by police over an alleged assault after his wife's BMW hit a neighbour's van.
The two families are said to have had a long-running dispute over parking access at the back of their homes.
It is claimed that Mr Bell, 62, who is a barrister, got involved in a row over the garden wall following the accident.
Within an hour, the Middlesbrough MP was arrested at his pounds 200,000 home.
Mr Bell, the area's MP for 17 years, was taken to a police station where he was interviewed about an alleged assault. He was released on bail without charge while inquiries continue. Mr Bell, who played a key role in exposing the Cleveland child abuse scandal in 1987, declined to comment.
His solicitor Donald O'Rourke said: "It seems much ado about nothing and I would be surprised if anything comes of it."
Wife Margaret apparently reversed into a Ford Transit belonging to neighbour Gordon Maclure's son Malcolm.
Yesterday Malcolm, 35, said he had been "manhandled" by the MP, but was unhurt.
The Guardian, 31 Jan 2009
Bell, Labour MP for Middlesbrough, is director of Spenview, described as " a private boutique of companies" including Spenview Communications, a consultancy firm. Until its website became password protected, Spenview Communications claimed to "have represented multinational banks, accountancy firms, PR companies, property companies as well as private clients from the Arabian Gulf, UK, Russia and France".
It also claimed to "offer exciting insights into government thinking on a broad range of legislative and regulatory topics covering all aspects of commerce and business". The website added: "For reasons of confidentiality, we do not feel that we are able to openly disclose intimate project details online." Bell said: "None of the people have anything to do with parliament or lobbying. This is a private family business. The website covers my writing and I am an international lawyer." He declined to give any more information.
