As anybody that went to visit Mayor Mallon would know he was always very careful to avoid recording devices – especially when he was promising the earth in settlement for our homes and businesses. Promises that could never have been realised through public funds alone! So, why was he so loose tongued in conversations with a Taxi firm boss? Whatever possessed him to drop his guard on a person and issue that matters little to ordinary non club going mortals of the Boro? Why would he swear with such venom? Drunks get ripped off by Taxis - happens the world over. Relatively would he now not understand the anger of homeowners facing the threat of the bulldozer for years and years with very little hope of getting anything approaching a decent price for their one and only major asset? 40 quid for a taxi ride – when on average homeowners stood to lose £35k each from his regime’s demolition policies. So without the sexist, racism and industrial language there is something much more fundamentally wrong with this sorry episode. What is more important to the Mayor’s office and the man himself? Maybe the comments themselves give us clues to what matters the most to the man: “You wanna hope that I stand and I get elected and I’ll tell you for why, if I don’t you’ll be offering me a job and I will be charging you £100 an hour.” IS THIS HIS EGO AND NOT HIS EFFORTS FOR PUBLIC GOOD????
The Mayor leads the Executive, promotes public engagement in the work of the Council and acts as the first citizen of Middlesbrough. The Mayor has outlined his vision of a better, cleaner Middlesbrough by creating a clean, safe environment, physical regeneration of the town, a business-friendly enterprise culture and a transport network which meets the needs of a town on the way up.
