“Clairville” first appears on the map of Middlesbrough in 1875 as the name given to a new road planned to link Park Road North with Marton Road, although the first houses, known at first as “Clairville Terrace” were not built until 1897. In those days, the area was known as Grove Hill, an exclusive residential district at the very edge of town.
The large field along one side of the road was purchased in two stages by Middlesbrough County Borough Council, partly from the Owners of the Middlesbrough Estate, 29th May, 1911, for £10,000, the remainder for £7,000 from William Connal on 4th November, 1925. Styled Clairville Recreation Ground, but more generally known as Clairville Common, it proved to be a popular venue for such events as fairs, circuses, cricket and football matches.
