ToryBoy: The Movie

Election candidate's movie criticises Sir Stuart Bell MP
by Neil Macfarlane, Evening Gazette
May 17 2011
A DEFEATED election candidate is preparing to screen a new documentary which he believes could lead to the fall of his rival.
John Walsh unsuccessfully ran for the Conservative party in last May’s general election in Middlesbrough standing against Labour’s Sir Stuart Bell MP.
Sir Stuart was re-elected for a seventh time, but Mr Walsh, a Bafta-nominated documentary maker, spent the campaign filming his experiences for his latest production “ToryBoy: The Movie”.
After talking to constituents and looking into Sir Stuart’s work as MP, he thinks he may have unearthed enough evidence to trigger a by-election. He denied he set out to make his rival the villain of the piece, but said: “A lot of people will think that when they see it.”
Mr Walsh said that he and Sir Stuart almost come to blows in the finals scenes of the documentary, filmed on election night.
He said he was “appalled” when he found out that Sir Stuart had not held a constituency surgery for over a decade. Earlier this year, Sir Stuart came under fire for comments he made about constituency surgeries for local residents.
A national newspaper reported he had not held any for the last 14 years, after one resident threatened to assault him.
He later defended his record as MP and said that while he does not hold open constituency meetings, he does arrange meetings by appointment, and can be reached by residents at any time. He said: “I visit people in their home. I have surgeries on appointment.”
But Mr Walsh said he believes the people of Middlesbrough will think “it is time for a change” when they see his film, which he hopes to screen in the town soon.
Sir Stuart Bell’s office declined to comment last night.

Labour veteran hasn't held voters' surgery for 14 years: Mother is snubbed 40 times by MP who says 'I haven’t let people down'

Defiant: Middlesbrough MP Sir Stuart Bell with his wife Margaret, who acts as one of his two case workers
A leading Labour MP who has not held a constituency surgery for 14 years last night denied he had let down voters.
Sir Stuart Bell’s policy came to light after a constituent complained that she had made up to 40 requests to meet the MP – but was told there was no need to speak to him.
Sir Stuart, 72, knighted in 2004 for ‘services to Parliament’, stopped holding surgeries in 1997. He said he ‘feared for his safety’ after a constituent had threatened him. But pressed further, he admitted he had never been physically attacked.
In contrast, fellow Labour MP Stephen Timms nearly died after he was stabbed at a surgery in East Ham, East London, last May but resumed his meetings the following month.
Most MPs, including Cabinet grandees, hold weekly or fortnightly surgeries. David Cameron, in line with his predecessors such as Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher, finds time to conduct surgeries in his seat in Witney, Oxfordshire.
Alison Liddle said she first approached Middlesbrough MP Sir Stuart in September 2008 for help in securing maintenance payments for her son from the Child Support Agency.
She and partner Mark Corfield claim to have tried to arrange a meeting up to 40 times.
‘At first we were told Sir Stuart would write a letter to the CSA and we did not have to speak to him,’ said Mr Corfield.
‘We have been told over and over that there is no need to speak to him.’
Ms Liddle said: ‘It has been excuse after excuse. I am fuming. It’s us who put him there – he needs to be held responsible for the job he is paid to do.’
Barrister Sir Stuart, who was first elected in 1983, said that although he did not have the usual surgeries open to all-comers, he had ‘surgeries by appointment’ where he met voters on an individual basis. ‘I do street surgeries and visit people in their homes,’ he added.
He said he met people ‘every Friday’ at Middlesbrough town hall. But asked the last time he held a meeting there, he replied: ‘Three or four months ago.’
‘There is no rule that says you have to see your MP,’ Sir Stuart added. ‘I have two case workers who deal with 100 cases a week. You can’t see everyone who wants to see you. I have been elected in my seat seven times. My constituents are very happy.’
He stopped holding open surgeries in 1997 because ‘I was attacked twice by this lunatic guy. He came rushing at me with fists flying’.
Asked if the man had punched him, Sir Stuart replied: ‘He didn’t actually hit me because I held him off. He kept coming back and said he wanted to get my son. I had to call the police. He also threatened me on the phone at the last election.
‘I decided it was safer to hold private surgeries where people could come by appointment or I could see them in their homes.’
Elusive: One of Sir Stuart Bell's constituents made 40 requests to meet the MP
He was defended by wife Margaret, one of his case workers, who said it was not necessarily a disadvantage if voters could not meet their MP face to face.
Sir Stuart, a former aide to ex-deputy Labour leader Roy Hattersley, was criticised in
the expenses scandal when he tried to stop MPs’ claims being exposed and said the way information was leaked was ‘disgraceful’. At one point he said MPs could be justified in refusing to pay back money.
He also led an unsuccessful campaign to stop discredited Speaker Michael Martin from being sacked.
Before entering politics he lived in France for 20 years and wrote a pornographic novel called Paris 69.
In the Eighties, Sir Stuart played a key role in exposing the Cleveland child abuse scandal, when up to 100 children were wrongly diagnosed at Middlesbrough hospital as being victims of sex abuse.

bwm,
the film was originally meant to be an expose of the Tory Party. In his own words, John Walsh was a former card-carrying member of the Labour Party, like yourself. He signed up to be a Tory candidate to get behind the scenes of the Conservatives. What he found when he came to Middlesbrough was a complete shock to him - enough for it to change the whole purpose of the film.

You're right, btw, that, when it comes to Bell, people should judge as they find. For party members like yourself, obviously, there is a different level of service afforded by our absentee MP. For the man on the street, it's not a case of judging how they find - it's being unable to find him in the first place!

ToryBoy The Movie
Toryboy the movie is the story of film-maker and lifelong Labour voter John Walsh who became a Conservative Candidate for a seat in a staunch Labour heartland.
When Conservative leader and future Prime Minister David Cameron opened up the short-list for candidates, Walsh took a great leap into the unknown and this film charts that story. From Labour lad to Conservative chap in a town where voting anything but Labour is unheard of.
Set during the British 2010 General Election Campaign, what the film attempts to uncover is a place where intimidation and neglect have scarred a town that national politics has forgotten.
In the film Tory Boy Walsh sets out on a quest to find the local absentee Labour Member of Parliament Sir Stuart Bell. The film uses the insights from the candidates point of view added to some cheeky animation techniques.
ToryBoy is labelled by the makers as a political satire that cuts to the heart of the current British anger over politicians who have exploited a system and taxpayer for years.
The film was shot in Teesside during the winter of 2009 and through 2010s General Election year. Most of the filming took pace within the constituency battleground town of Middlesbrough, but there was some filming in London too, which is Walsh's home town.
When asked how he thinks the film will go down Walsh says: "Most of my film work has not been divisive and there has been a general consensus about the issues raised, such as homelessness, disabled children learning martial arts or teenage anger management. "
"For something like this, an investigative film, there will be some who think that I have exceeded my brief as a candidate. I would say that it is right to look at injustice and in this country people have died so that we may all have the right to question those in authority and those in public office."
John Walsh went onto explain that " It was the expenses scandal which blew off the doors of the political system and allowed people like myself to stand for parliament for the first time. When I got to Middlesbrough I found a town that politics had forgotten and a MP who was there in name only, a truly depressingly affair. I hope that my film will raise awareness of what is still going on in the safe political seats and start that long road for change that the people in the town so desperately need. "
The film will be released later in the year and although the film’s primary life will be on television, It has been entered it into a number national and international film festivals.

oh and tosha is on a flight from Jersey at the moment    ;)
that hacks off some theories about who is whom here    ;)

You inferred Honto was banned becasue of me, firstly I do not know he has been banned, secondly it was nothing at all to do with me. I have only your claim that he was banned. But actually, I don't care. Thats the thing about posting on the EG forum and seeing the censorship there, water off a ducks back, how many times did you start posts in other places about its censorship ?, if its one then you may have a point worthy of a second look, as it is, from what I gather you only bothered to do that about this place.

So massive pro Labour bias in a forum is OK by you, take it on the chin, yet you claim this place does it also and run off to post about it.

What was that again...agendas....

Dont tell anyone, because we’re not supposed to talk about it, but rumour has it that a Teesside MP has had a Ryan Giggs-style gagging order imposed around a forthcoming trial. So, not only do we never see him, now we’ll not hear about what he’s been up to either. Wonder what it is that he’s going to such lengths to keep from the public, ‘cos I doubt he’s been having an affair with Imogen Thomas!
